Standing on the cliffs in front of Cabo Rojo Lightouse
The Cabo Rojo Lighthouse Puerto Rico was our second stop of the trip. We stopped at the Salt Mines on the way here just briefly.
We drove down a long dirt road to get to the lighthouse and parked at Playa Sucia which translates to dirty beach. I thought that was funny. The beach isn’t really dirty, they call it that because of the grass growing on the shore.
I walked around the parking lot and beach area with my mom while my son hiked up to the lighthouse with his grandpa. My son took the pictures. I wish I would’ve gone up there with them after seeing how beautiful it is up there.
My son took some really great pictures though. He said he had a great time and told me what he learned at the lighthouse and it gave him some time to bond with his grandpa again. The two were thick as thieves before my parents moved to Puerto Rico.

About Cabo Rojo Lighthouse Puerto Rico

Cabo Rojo Lighthouse Steps
Built in 1882, the Cabo Rojo Lighthouse was the second one built by the Spaniards in Puerto Rico. The lantern room was built of cast iron, glass and copper.
Helping guide the ships through the Mona Passage, the keeper of the lighthouse and his family also had housing on site.
To get to the lighthouse, you’ll take a 1.1-kilometer dirt road that has a lot of potholes in it, don’t let this deter you from visiting, just take it easy.
All of Puerto Rico’s 15 lighthouses were placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1981, 11 of which are still active today.
The Lighthouse is open Thursday through Tuesday from 9am to 4pm and is closed Wednesdays. Admission is free and you get a free trolley ride as well. The Lighthouse is located at PR-301, Boquerón, Cabo Rojo, Puerto Rico 00622. Phone: 787-255-1560.
Summary

Cabo Rojo Lighthouse Cliffs
I didn’t take the hike up to see the lighthouse because I didn’t want to leave my mom down in the parking lot by herself.
She wanted to collect a few rocks and she’s not supposed to be lifting things, so I stayed down and helped her.
I definitely missed out on seeing these cliffs and the ocean below. The hike would’ve been rough on me, but I should’ve gone up with them.
Have you been there? I’d love to hear what you thought of it. What was your favorite part of the whole experience?
Please drop a few lines in the comments box below and let me know how your visit went.
In the meantime, safe travels!
