Fort Matanzas Beach Florida
Florida . Road Trip Stops . Washington DCFort Matanzas Beach Florida
Fort Matanzas Beach Florida was another stop that we hadn’t planned to make when we left home. But since we left so early, it became another place to stop and kill some time while our schedule caught up with us.
Fort Matanzas National Monument is literally right across the street from this beach and was our first scheduled stop of the day. But it wasn’t open yet since it was still just after 6am when we arrived. We had 3 hours to kill if we wanted to see the fort.
It wasn’t on our Roadtrippers itinerary but if we stayed there for a few hours, we could’ve visited the fort and gotten on schedule with what I had planned. But after 20 minutes or so on the beach, we were really wanting to hit the road again. We ended up deciding to visit the Fort either on our way back or another time altogether since it was only a couple hours away from home.

About Fort Matanzas Beach Florida
Located at 8635 A1A S. in St. Augustine, Fort Matanzas Beach is another one that is off the beaten path and a fisherman’s dream! This white sandy beach doesn’t get too crowded and is a great place to go just to relax for the day.
Parking is free as is entrance onto the beach. Keep your pets on a leash and you can bring them along! There are no public facilities at this beach, no bathrooms.
We didn’t stay here for very long as it was just because we were anxious to hit the road. But it was a nice little stop to take in the sun and fresh air before being stuck in the car for several hours.
Summary
Even though we were there for such a short time, we got to see a sand castle that someone had started. We walked out to the water’s edge and got our feet wet. Arriving shortly after sun rise, we just hung out for 20 minutes or so enjoying the scenery and killing time.
I’d highly recommend you add Fort Matanzas Beach Florida to your list of road trip stops… even if it’s just for a few minutes. It’s so beautiful and serene. Have you been there? I’d love to hear what you thought of it. Please drop a few lines in the comments box below and let me know how your visit went.
In the meantime, safe travels!
