The National Museum African American History Washington DC is a Smithsonian museum at the National Mall.  Established in December 2003, its permanent home opened in September 2016 with a ceremony led by then President Barack Obama.

It is located at 1400 Constitution Ave NW, Washington DC 20560.  Phone: (844) 750-3012.  The museum is open Wednesday through Sunday from 11am to 4pm.

Visitors must reserve a free timed-entry pass for admission.  A limited number of passes are available and can be reserved up to 30 days in advance.  Passes are released daily beginning at 8am EST.  Same-day passes are released at 8:15am EST daily.  You can reserve up to 6 passes which may not be sold or transferred.

Groups larger than six are prohibited at this time.  All passes will be scanned upon entering the museum on Madison Dr. NW.  Passes can be exchanged for another day by calling (9800) 514-3849.

Some exhibits may be closed due to Covid-19.  Most seated theaters and larger objects remain closed at this time.  Obviously, knives and firearms are prohibited, as are screwdrivers, scissors, mace, and pepper spray.  The use of tripods and selfie sticks are not allowed.

Summary

This museum was still being built when my son and I took our road trip.  So, unfortunately, we didn’t get an opportunity to tour it.  But it will definitely be added to the itinerary for one of our future trips.
